I was happily surprised when we were driving through Siracusa on Sicily last month and suddenly this huge concrete cone church appeared above town: the Sanctuary Madonna della Lacrime (“Shrine of Our Lady of Tears”), which was built over a Madonna statue that is said to weep tears in 1954 and is supposed to resemble a tear drop. It’s kind of kitschy in a way, but I really love the geometrical linings of it and – of course ;-) – the fact that it’s made all of out of concrete.
